Our Story
Want to hear a story about story about how to start a business with a chaotic brain? Well, have a seat and lets get cracking.
I’m Clementine, Clem for short, I have always been a bit more of a ‘creative type’ (which mostly means I didn’t do well in a classroom). When I became pregnant at 23 very shortly after meeting my husband ( true story!) I decided to stay at home with my son. All well and good except we needed a little extra income. This is where SoSatsuma (yes! It’s all one word ..quirky!) began. I called my new business something awful, which a close friend quickly pointed out . The conversation in a nutshell “ that’s a terrible name, call it something like .. So Satsuma” and so I did!
In the beginning...
I began by making various things with the little skill I had while Nanna Satsuma ( my Mum) knitted. The knitting took off and we became a modern knitting company for 13 year just Nanna and I knitting you can still find our Hand knitted range on the website.
This was a perfect little enterprise while my son’s ( I later had another, nope, still not a planned one) grew. Both now in their late teens it became time for me to “get a grown up job” . Yeah, I tried, and turns out I’m not built for that. At this point we ventured into clothing to help expand the business and mostly because everyone kept asking where my clothes were from.
Has it been a smooth run?
With no written plan and not always a clear direction, it has been a bumpy ride, but i’m nothing if not adaptive/creative. But in 2025 something changed. The instagram algorithm gods decided to show my ridiculous jumper reel to a lot of people and fortunately lots of those people liked it! And tadah! You have found me!
SoSatsuma has grown and changed to become a clothing Collection curated personally by me, If I don’t like it, it doesn’t get in. My absolute aim is comfortable clothes that help you feel like YOU, clothes that help you show up confident and quietly quirky.
It has been a wild ride and I’m so excited see where we can go next!
